TONIGHT (Jan. 5), SUPPORT LANDMARKING THE CURIOUS GEORGE BUILDING!
Welcome back, and Happy Holidays!
All of us at Our Harvard Square wish you a wonderful start to 2017.
2017 is off to a roaring start in Cambridge. Tonight, January 5, the Cambridge Historical Commission will hear a petition by Our Harvard Square and Cambridge residents to Landmark the Abbott Building, home to the World’s Only Curious George store! The hearing will begin at 6:00 in the Cambridge Senior Center (806 Mass. Ave.). The agenda includes several other important cases, such as a petition to Landmark the Foundry building in East Cambridge, and an application to alter the structure of 1-3 Brattle Street, the former home of Tory Row, and present (and soon to be former) home to the Crimson Corner newsstand.
Tonight’s hearing is essential for all to attend, as it represents a move towards the protection of two essential parts of our community: local business and historic buildings. As neighbors, employees, business owners, students and shoppers alike have lamented, 2016 saw local businesses closing their doors in Harvard Square. This includes Hidden Sweets, Tory Row, and soon-to-be Crimson Corner, as well as others. Preserving historic structures like the Abbott building prevents national developers like Equity One from merging historic buildings and manipulating their floor plans to meet the demands of large chains, which often cannot fit their large inventories into smaller storefronts.
Preservation and local business go hand-in-hand. Please join us at the Cambridge Senior Center TONIGHT to express your support for preservation and local business in our square, by supporting a Landmark Study of the Abbott Building!
Best wishes for a 2017 in which we all raise our powerful voices!
